Tim wins Deaf 10km Championship
DUKA athlete Tim Stones has continued to perform at the highest level in all competitions, below is the latest report from one of our outstanding athletes.
On Saturday 13 March, I competed in and won the first ever Western Cape Deaf 10km Championships, in Worcester, South Africa.
It was the first time a provincial Deaf 10km Championship has been held in South Africa, so it was very special. I am not sure about this, but wonder whether there has ever been a Deaf 10km Championship (provincial or national) anywhere in the world?
The same day, in the afternoon, I travelled to another town, where I competed in the Clive Truter Masters series. I ran the 800m and the 1500m races. The 800m was my first race of that distance since school days (14 years!). I wanted to do it for the fun of it, and also to test my speed as I prepare for Romania. It went quite well, and I came third in my age-group (30-34).
The 1500m was a great race for me. My time would have been a lot faster had I had someone pushing me, but, after 150m, I found the pace far too slow, and went out to the front. It felt different (I am, after all, a Marathoner!), but thrilling at the same time, knowing I was leading the race, and "all" I had to do was stay in front, and the win was mine. I managed to do so, and comfortably won the 1500m.
I have decided to compete in the 1500m and the 10 000m at the South African Masters Championships, which take place on 30 April and 1 May.
Tim has also had his outstanding performances recognised by the Western Cape Deaf Sports Federation (WCDSF). Petrus Burger, who is the Chairperson of WCDSF writes:
WCDSF is proud of Tim because he did well.
Tim Stones won 2 Gold medals (10000m and 400m), 2 Silvers 1500m & 5000m) at WP Masters Athletics Championships. He has been selected to represent Boland at the SA Masters Athletics Championships.
1st place - Rainbow Marathon 10km (the WC Deaf 10km Champs)
3rd place - 800m Masters at Cape Town
1st place - 1500m Masters at Cape Town
Congratulations.
Keep up the good work
Petrus BurgerDUKA is very proud to have Tim in the team and wishes him all the best for the future.
