Tim's back in the racing habit
Prison to Prison half-marathon
Tim ran a half-marathon (21.1km) on Saturday 6 February, in Worcester, South Africa. It was the Prison to Prison half-marathon. His time was 94:53min, and he was 52nd overall. The course started with 5km within the Prison grounds, largely off-road (gravel), and then had 16km out-and-back (8km plus 8km), over a very hilly route. It was 32 degrees celsius on the day! What a lucky guy!
"This was my first half-marathon for 2010, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!" said Tim.
Model Sports Valentines 10km Night Race
Following on from this, he ran the Model Sports Valentines 10km Night Race, on Friday 12 February 2010. His time was 43:12min, and he came 30th overall.
Tim used this Valentines 10km race to prepare for the upcoming Western Province Masters Athletics Championships, which caters for athletes 30 years and older. "Now that I am almost 31 (on the 28th February), I qualify to compete in my first ever Masters Track and Field Championship. Up for grabs is the "mainstream" provincial Masters Championship, and I am planning to compete in at least two events." hinted Tim.
Masters Provincial Championships
The Masters Provincial Championships is also a qualifier for the South African National Masters Track and Field Championships, in which Tim hope to compete. They take place on the last day of April and the first day of May 2010. Based on the results of the past couple of years, and his current form, he feels that he has a good chance of medalling in the Provincial Masters Championships (30-34 age-group), and also of being a medallist at the SA National Masters Champs.
"I would very much like to compete in the 10,000m, but it takes place late (after 8pm) next Friday evening, and there are events I want to run the next day. With my two young boys, this makes things a little difficult, as it is over an hour's drive to the venue. In the worst case scenario, I will compete on Saturday 20th Feb, in Cape Town, in the 5,000m, and probably also the 1,500m. My reasoning for running the 1,500m as well is to have a good speed workout in racing conditions as part of my preparation for Romania." summed up Tim.
DUKA wishes him all the best. Watch this space for the outcome.
